If you have a beautifully unique hair color, then finding hair extensions that are a perfect match can be a difficult task! You don't need to stress though as one of the best things about human hair extensions is that they can be dyed. Follow this step-by-step guide on how to dye hair extensions to match your natural color and create your perfect hair shade.

If you are thinking about hair extensions coloring please keep in mind that you need hair extensions you can dye so make sure to get a set of 100% human hair because synthetic hair does not hold the dye. Real hair extensions will provide the perfect clean slate for coloring since they react just how your natural hair would to the process.

recommendations.

wash the whole set of extensions before coloring.

Human hair extensions come pre-conditioned and the silky coating needs to be removed in order for the color to be absorbed evenly.

use a semi or permanent hair dye.

While a semi-permanent color will only last for a number of washes and it might be a solution if you’re not 100% sure about the color, the permanent dye lasts a longer period of time. Use the latter when dying hair extensions if you know for sure what color you want to get.

always use a small weft to color test before dyeing.

A color test on a 1 clip weft will ensure that you are satisfied with the shade before moving on to dyeing the extensions. If you don't like the result, you can adjust the formula or the processing time to get better results. Make more then one test if necessary and only after you are satisfied with the color, move on to the rest of the set.

              don’t forget to moisturize.

Color-treated hair needs extra care so always use a sulfate-free moisturizing shampoo and conditioner set to get the best nourishment for your newly colored hair extensions.

                please avoid:

dyeing the whole set all together.

This will cause tangling and knots and will damage the outcome irreparably.

                using any bleach.

Bleach or peroxide affects the hair cuticle and should not be used without professional help. Since the real human hair extensions have already been dyed in the manufacturing process, bleaching can cause serious quality loss to your hair extensions.

                  over-washing.

It is very important to keep the human hair extensions clean especially after using hair products and hot tools on them, but washing the hair too often will dry it out, so a good alternative is to use dry shampoo in-between washes.

Our how to dye hair extensions guide is as easy as these 6 steps:

                    prepare your work area.

You will need the following materials to start dying hair extensions:
                    • A fabulous set of human hair extensions
                    • Professional hair color and developer (try to avoid 30% and higher volume developers, as they might damage the hair extensions)
                    • A pair of disposable gloves
                    • A bowl for the color and a brush to apply it with
                    • Tinfoil
                    • Plastic wrap
                    • A towel
                    • A wide-toothed comb
                    • A deep conditioner for aftercare

                      mix your color.

Set up all of your tools and supplies on a flat surface so you can work comfortably. To protect your working space, spread tin foil sheets across it so that it doesn't get stained in the process. Read the directions you find on the dye box and start mixing the color with the developer as described by the manufacturer.

                      apply your color.

Be sure to wear your disposable gloves once you start the hair extensions coloring process. Using the color brush, thoroughly paint over each weft separately, ensuring that you cover both sides of the real hair extensions, from top to ends. Don't forget to also apply color on the textile strip where the clips are attached so that they blend in perfectly one you apply them in your hair!

                      let the color develop.

Once you have applied the layer of dye on all human hair wefts, cover them loosely with plastic wrap to protect the color from drying out. Allow the color to process according to the directions on the color box, usually between 20 and 40 minutes, depending on the color and the brand. After that, remove the tin foil and get it to the sink for rinsing.

                      rinse thoroughly.

Make sure that the water is cool or lukewarm and at low pressure. Gently use your fingers to rinse off the color from your real hair extensions. Hold each weft from the top part and let the water run down the length of the hair strip, to avoid tangling. Rinse the hair until there is no more color running off, even if it takes as long as 15 minutes. After the complete rinsing procedure, wash the human hair extensions with shampoo and use a color-safe conditioner.

                      comb the hair.

After you made sure that there's no more color running off the hair extensions, lay down a thick towel on your workspace and start using a wide-toothed comb to gently work your way through the human hair extensions wefts until they are smooth and straight.

allow to dry & then style.

The colored hair extensions must be completely air dried before using them. If you plan on using hot tools, we suggest using a heat protectant spray before starting to style them.

Don't forget to treat your hair extensions with care, as they are as delicate as your own hair and they require the same amount of maintenance to stay in good shape.
