Should you wash your wig?

Absolutely, you should wash your wig periodically to keep it clean, fresh, and looking its best. Just like natural hair, wigs can accumulate dirt, sweat, and styling product residue over time. Regular washing helps maintain the wig's appearance, texture, and overall quality.

For human hair wigs, washing is necessary to remove oil, dirt, and styling products from the hair strands. Human hair wigs can be washed less frequently than your natural hair but should be cleaned regularly to maintain their softness and shine.

For synthetic wigs, washing is generally required less frequently compared to human hair wigs. Synthetic wigs have a coating that helps them retain their style, and washing too often can shorten their lifespan.

If you haven't washed your wig yet, here are some tips to help you clean it properly and maintain its quality:

1. detangle the wig:

Before washing, gently detangle the wig using a wide-tooth comb or a wig brush. Start from the ends and work your way up to avoid damaging the wig's fibers.

2. wet the hair:

Avoid using hot water as it can damage synthetic wigs and cause human hair wigs to lose their natural shine.

3. use wig-friendly shampoo:

Choose a shampoo specifically formulated for wigs, or a sulfate-free shampoo whether they are synthetic or human hair wigs. Regular shampoos designed for natural hair may contain harsh chemicals that can harm wigs. Be gentle and avoid rubbing or twisting the wig excessively. Rinse thoroughly with clean water.

4. condition:

Apply a nourishing conditioner to the wig, focusing on the ends of the hair. Avoid applying conditioner to the wig cap or the roots, as it may weigh it down or cause it to become greasy. Leave the conditioner on for a few minutes to allow it to penetrate the hair strands. Rinse the wig thoroughly with lukewarm water.

5. dry the wig:

Gently squeeze out excess water from the wig. To air dry, place the wig on a towel and pat gently to remove additional moisture. Do not rub agressively as this may cause the hair to tangle or frizz. Allow the wig to air dry completely before styling,  wearing or storing it.

6. store properly:

When your wig is completely dry, store it in a clean and dry place, preferably on a wig stand or in its original designated recyclable packaging. Avoid storing the wig in direct sunlight or near heat sources as this may cause damage to the fibers.
